Portage - home visiting educational service

What is Portage?

Portage is a free home-based visiting educational service for pre-school children in North Lincolnshire with additional needs and their families.

We work with children aged 0-5 years, who have a recognised development delay of six months or more, in at least two areas of development.

Children do not need a diagnosis to access Portage.

The Portage approach involves supporting you to build on your child’s strengths using a positive approach.

The North Lincolnshire Portage Service is registered with the National Portage Association and fulfil all the criteria required for registration.

Referrals can be made by any professional working with your child. They should be accompanied by an early help assessment or an early help plan.

Parents can also self-refer.

If you are unsure whether to make a referral you can contact the Portage Team to discuss on 01724 296679.

The completed Referral form [PDF, 140Kb] must be signed by the parent or person with parental responsibility.

Please email your completed forms to nlportage@northlincs.gov.uk or post to:

Referrals will be discussed at the Early Years Triage meeting. A decision will be made by a multi-agency panel about which team / service will begin to support your child initially.

Once it has been agreed that Portage will work with your child, you will be contacted by the Portage Manager who will make an appointment to visit you and your child at home.

The initial visit will last for approximately one hour. During this time we will gather information about your child’s needs.

If the service is appropriate, you will be assigned a Portage Early Years Practitioner (EYP). They will visit you weekly or fortnightly for approximately one hour. They will bring a number of toys / equipment that are appropriate to support your child.

Portage Workers help parents to teach their children new skills using a range of techniques that are known to work well for children with additional needs.

The Practitioner will ask you to repeat short activities during the week until the next visit. This is to support your child to practice and develop new skills

If your child is going into nursery, pre-school, or a childminder we will provide support to staff to ensure your child is settled and given supportive access to learning.

We work closely with all professionals involved with your child to ensure plans and support is coordinated.

This group is available for families who are involved with the Portage Team.

It is an informal, fun play session and offers parents time to talk with other families.

The sessions provide families with an opportunity to meet on a regular basis and share experiences.

The Session is held on Fridays from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Early Learning Development Centre, Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe, DN16 2RY. Tel: 01724 296679
