Wellbeing and Young Carers Team
A Young Carer is someone under the age of 18 who assists in the care / support of someone if their family or a friend has:
- A disability
- An illness / long term health condition
- A mental health condition
- Misuses drugs or alcohol
The North Lincolnshire Wellbeing and Young Carer Team offer information and advice to children and families where there is an identified young carer role present.
Young Carers under 18 are entitled to a Young Carer Needs Assessment (whether you do lots of caring or not very much caring).
At the assessment, the Wellbeing and Young Carer worker will ask questions to help them build a picture of how your caring role is part of your life.
Afterwards the council must give a written report to you and your parent(s)/carers that says:
- What you talked about
- What will happen next
- Whether the council thinks you, the person you care for, or someone in your family should get help/support
- What help the council will give
- What help other services might be able to give
When we do the Young Carer Needs Assessment, we have to think about what your support needs are as a Young Carer.
At the same time, we have to think about supporting other people in your family. This is called a “whole family approach”. It is designed to build up a proper understanding of how different people in the family affect and support each other.
The Wellbeing and Young Carer worker will explore whether your caring responsibilities are having an impact upon your education, social opportunities and or physical/emotional wellbeing, If this is the case, we will look at how we can reduce any identified impact.
Our overall aim is to reduce excessive / inappropriate levels of caring activity and to support the impact of caring.
We frequently work closely with schools, colleges and other support services to meet the needs of Young Carers.
Anyone can make a referral to the Wellbeing and Young Carer Team. This includes schools, social care and health services.
We also accept self-referrals.
Our referral forms are available to download below:
The completed referral form must be signed by both child and person with parental responsibility.
Please email your completed form to email@example.com or post to Young Carers Support Service, Early Learning Development Centre, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN16 2RY
